Our Toby Came From Cavalier Rescue USA

Did you know that our Toby came from Cavalier Rescue USA? We absolutely love him and he’s just what my sad heart needed to take away the pain of losing my Katie girl in 1995. She was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from a breeder in Washington State. I bought Katie and brought her home at the age of 10 weeks, driving from Washington to Colorado.

At just 8 weeks of age, Toby was given to Cavalier Rescue USA from a breeder. She knew that this organization would give him the best life, rather than her selling him as a pet-quality pup. It’s a good thing she did, too!

Toby has had a rough start to life with two heart surgeries before the age of 6 months.  He was born with a Congenital Heart defect called Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). It is a condition wherein the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth. Fortunately, the examining Vet with the Austin Chapter of CR-USA caught his heart murmur and he was immediately seen by a cardiac specialist. She recommended surgery to close the hole, and Texas A&M donated most of the cost toward his surgeries (two!)

Toby was ready to be adopted by us at 7 months old, and he had already had his diagnoses and surgeries so we knew exactly what he needed — ME! I’m home full-time, am willing to give him his medications three times per day, and we are very careful to take in fosters who are not dominant or aggressive to the little guy. Isn’t he cute in his new winter coat? He’s not amused.

Toby is the reason we don’t live in Colorado. Although he’s been weaned off his blood pressure medications by age 18 months, he still is at risk for blood pressure at altitude, and high stress situations.  He’s what we call “fragile”, so he’s home with me, and travels with me in the car or golf cart as much as possible. He’s been in every store I frequent except for HEB, and I understand he’s actually welcome there, too. It’s just too stressful with all the ladies fawning over him and taking selfies.

I am the Assistant Director for CR-USA, Austin chapter. If you would like to have a Cavalier for yourself, before you consider buying a puppy from a breeder, would you consider adopting one from us? We are found in all fifty states of the United States, all different ages, genders, and will be more than fully vetted before you take your fur baby home.
